See Think Wonder

INTRODUCTION
In this module, we explore one of Programs favourite thinking routines used to engage with exhibitions – See Think Wonder. Discover how this thinking routine enhances the visitor experience and fosters a deeper understanding of applied arts and science.

THINKING ROUTINES
Thinking routines are specialized tools designed to support and guide visitors’ cognitive processes during their museum experience. Originating from Project Zero’s Visible Thinking research initiative, these routines consist of a set of questions or steps that are regularly used. They are short, memorable, and based on thoughtfully crafted questions, making them adaptable to analyse various materials, including objects, artifacts, photographs, and documents related to applied arts and science.

SEE THINK WONDER

See Think Wonder is a fantastic thinking routine, especially suitable for those new to Visible Thinking, It encourages visitors to:

  • Engage in careful observations of the exhibits
  • Offer thoughtful interpretations of the objects and artifacts
  • Stimulate curiosity about the principles and applications of science and the arts

This routine comprises three simple questions:

  1. What do you see?
  2. What do you think is happening or how does it work?
  3. What does it make you wonder or what questions does it raise in your mind?

Let’s explore each question in detail:

WHAT DO YOU SEE?
Before starting the routine, ask all visitors to take a moment to observe the exhibit or artifact in front of them. This focused observation helps visitors notice details they might have missed at first glance and gain a comprehensive understanding of the object’s design, structure, and function. By emphasizing observation as the first step, we encourage visitors to form a holistic view of the exhibit before interpreting its purpose or significance.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS HAPPENING OR HOW DOES IT WORK?
Following the detailed observation, naturally progress to the second question. This allows visitors to share their interpretations and thoughts on how the exhibit functions or the principles behind its design. By inviting visitors to think critically and analytically, we encourage a deeper engagement with the applied arts and sciences on display.

WHAT DOES IT MAKE YOU WONDER OR WHAT QUESTIONS DOES IT RAISE IN YOUR MIND?
This question opens the floor for visitors to ask additional questions or share their thoughts. These wonderings can lead to further exploration of the exhibition’s context, history, or potential applications. Encouraging visitors to inquire and seek answers fosters a sense of curiosity and intellectual curiosity within the museum space.
