National Volunteer Week is a time to recognize and celebrate the remarkable contributions of volunteers across the country. These individuals dedicate their time, skills, and passion to make a difference in their communities. Last week, we had the honor of celebrating the Powerhouse volunteers.
Sir Isaac Newton once said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” In our case, these giants are the countless volunteers, ranging from millennials to awe-inspiring nonagenarians, who have lent us their time and expertise. During National Volunteer Week, they shared heartwarming stories of their work in various departments, such as the Textiles Centre, Culinary Archives, Steam Outreach, Collection Research, Object Talks and Community Tours. It was an opportunity for volunteers, staff and executive to celebrate volunteers’ collaborative efforts; invigorating collection stories and making them accessible and engaging for a wider audience.
The theme for this year’s National Volunteer Week was “The Changemakers.” Over the last few years it has been inspiring to witness how our volunteers have embraced and adapted to the ever-evolving world around us. Expanding initiatives like Collection Conversations, allowing us to connect with audiences unable to visit the Museum in person.
In an era where meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging are vital for overall well-being, we consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have a team of volunteers who epitomise these values. Their genuine care for one another, the staff they work with, and the impact of the collection’s stories is truly remarkable.
While National Volunteers Week is an opportunity to celebrate volunteers, it’s important to acknowledge the supervisors and staff who provide guidance and support on their journey. The supervisor’s and executive’s commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive environment has helped create an atmosphere where volunteers can excel and make a significant impact.
Finally, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to the volunteers who graciously shared their stories during National Volunteer Week. Your willingness to step forward and share your experiences not only showcased the breadth and depth of volunteer projects but also highlighted the incredible expertise that you bring to the Museum.
National Volunteer Week serves as a reminder of the incredible power of volunteering and the tremendous contributions made by individuals who give their time selflessly. We are grateful for the invaluable support and dedication of the Powerhouse volunteers, who continue to enrich our institution and inspire us all. Their efforts exemplify the true spirit of “The Changemakers” and we look forward to many more years of collaboration, growth, and shared success. Thank you to all the volunteers, supervisors, and staff who make this journey possible.
