Last Saturday, Castle Hill Family Day transformed into a vibrant showcase of creativity and imagination with its “Building Worlds” theme. Six dedicated volunteers played a key role in guiding visitors through a series of engaging activities designed to ignite creativity and exploration in film set-production design.
The day began with industry experts from the Australian Production Design Guild, who inspired visitors to respond creatively to a story brief and set the stage for their imaginative projects.

Jacinta Leong, the sister of Powerhouse curator Roger Leong, is a renowned art director and production designer who led a workshop on sketching and storyboarding. With a filmography that includes Shang Chi, Alien: Covenant, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Unbroken, and Mad Max: Fury Road, Jacinta brought her expertise in bringing ideas to life on paper. Her distinguished career, featuring three ADG Awards, five ADG nominations, and an AACTA Award nomination in 2021 for her work on 2067, offered participants valuable insights as they developed their ideas through detailed sketches and storyboards.

Following this, Imogen Ross conducted the “Making the World” session, where attendees had the chance to bring their sketches to life in 3D. Using various materials, participants crafted intricate scale models of their imaginative worlds. Imogen’s hands-on approach and enthusiasm made this session a standout part of the day.

The day concluded with Eamon D’Arcy’s “Seeing the World” session. Participants learned innovative techniques for re-framing and altering their views of the worlds they had created. Using paper framing and their own digital devices, attendees explored new perspectives on their work, adding an interactive and fun element to their creative process.
The Castle Hill Family Day: Building Worlds was a tremendous success, thanks to the creativity and assistance of our volunteers! It was a day filled with imaginative exploration and hands-on learning. We eagerly anticipate future Family Day’s that will continue to inspire and engage our community.
