Thirlmere Festival of Steam……..

Steam trains always fascinate me, stirring up memories of a simpler era when life was slower. The train’s whistle and the rhythmic “chug, chug, chug” of its engines, coupled with the sight of billowing smoke through open windows, transport me back to a charming and nostalgic time.

The Thirlmere Festival of Steam 2024, held on 18 May, epitomized this sentiment as a community celebration of steam and nostalgia. As part of the event, the Powerhouse proudly showcased our Aveling & Porter steam tip wagon, Object No. B1509, which hails from England and once served Rockdale Council in the 1920s for road maintenance.  Read more here.

Volunteer John and Ralph, our Steam Education Officer, captivated visitors with intriguing stories of the steam wagon’s past and its significance in days gone by. They recounted tales of the skilled driver, possessing both a driver’s license and a steam ticket, maneuvering the wagon with aid from a dedicated “offsider.” This assistant not only managed the load but also assisted in tending to the firebox and maintaining the wagon by greasing and oiling it.

The festival drew in large crowds eager to experience the steam-powered excitement. Locomotives like the iconic 3265 and 3001 delighted visitors with scenic rides along the historic Loop Line from Thirlmere Station. Live steam model engines, displays of vintage machinery, and traction engines added to the festive atmosphere. The NSW Rail Museum offered captivating demonstrations, cab visits, and mini-train rides, while street parades and musical performances filled the day with joy.
