Unlocking Potential Through Education:
My Experience Volunteering with Ardoch
Last week, I had the privilege of volunteering at Cabramatta High School, helping students sharpen their interview skills—an essential step toward securing future employment. This opportunity was made possible through Ardoch, a remarkable children’s education charity dedicated to improving educational outcomes for young people in disadvantaged communities.
One program close to my heart is Literacy Buddies. This initiative pairs workplace volunteers (Big Buddies) with primary school students (Little Buddies) to foster literacy skills through letter writing.
Ardoch’s mission began in 1988 with a focus on supporting homeless youth to stay in school. Today, their impact extends much further, offering programs, resources, and initiatives such as providing breakfast, books, and excursions. They actively collaborate with schools to design programs aligned with the curriculum, including literacy, STEM, creativity, wellbeing, and career exploration.
The program also includes visits between students and workplaces, creating meaningful connections. Last week, I had the joy of meeting my Little Buddy during an excursion to the Sydney Observatory. We bonded over discussions about my work, played fun games like the “artist game,” and even launched paper airplanes together—an absolute hit with the children!
Beyond Literacy Buddies, I participated in Ardoch’s mock interview program, aimed at building students’ confidence, developing social skills, and inspiring optimism about their future. After completing a short training module, I arrived at the school and joined a group of enthusiastic volunteers from various organizations. We were warmly welcomed by the school staff and given a briefing by Ardoch coordinators, who provided us with a helpful guide for the day.
During the mock interviews, I played the role of a potential employer. While some students seemed a bit nervous at first, an icebreaker question quickly eased the tension, and their confidence began to shine. At the end of each interview, I offered constructive feedback, which the students genuinely appreciated
The experience was incredibly rewarding. Seeing the students gain confidence and feel empowered to pursue their aspirations was a reminder of how impactful small acts of volunteering can be. Programs like these don’t just teach skills—they inspire hope, foster growth, and unlock the limitless potential of young minds.
Ardoch’s programs are unfortunately coming to an end however some of their programs will continue with other organisations such as Ed-Connect Australia. Together, we can help create brighter futures for the next generation!
