Voices of the Night…

Collections research volunteer Brianna researched Object No. A2568 from the Powerhouse collection, shedding light on the legacy of Royal Doulton through one of its early masterpieces.

Sir Henry Doulton (1820–1897), pottery manufacturer

Royal Doulton was founded by Henry Doulton, an inventor and pottery manufacturer based at Lambeth Pottery in London. From 1877 and well into the 20th century, the company became one of the UK’s major producers of china and earthenware, with large-scale production eventually centred in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.

Sculptor George Tinworth at Lambeth studio

The “Voices of the Night” vase was created in 1876, just before Royal Doulton officially rose to prominence. Crafted by sculptor George Tinworth, the stoneware piece reflects the innovation and artistry that would come to define the Doulton name. Tinworth, known for his whimsical figures and detailed designs, played a key role in shaping the Lambeth studio’s artistic direction.

Royal Doulton’s influence lives on in pieces like this vase in the Powerhouse collection—reminders of a ceramic legacy.
