As part of our new series highlighting the incredible work of our behind-the-scenes volunteers, we are delighted to feature Maria Townsend, a dedicated volunteer who devotes her Tuesdays to volunteer with the curatorial team.
Maria’s current project focuses on cataloging the remarkable collection from F.V Richards and Co., a renowned British clothing store that operated from 1923 to 1973. Join us as we delve into Maria’s current work, which is vital in preserving the legacy of F.V Richards and Co.
At Maria’s desk in Harwood, I was immediately captivated by a massive book from F.V Richards and Co. collection, simply known as Richards. This legendary shop, which became synonymous with fine British clothing for men and women, left an indelible mark on the fashion landscape. From its humble beginnings in a single-roofed shanty in a remote mining town, Richards blossomed into a prosperous modern store with a reputation for exquisite craftsmanship.

For over 85 years, Richards remained a family-owned and operated business, gaining loyal customers who appreciated the finest quality and timeless British-style clothing. Their trademark store, located on Castlereagh Street, showcased a depth of 92 ft (28.04m) down Rowe Street, making it a striking landmark. The building’s impressive seven stories earned it the distinction of being the world’s tallest building relative to its narrow frontage.
The impact of F.V Richards and Co. on customers’ lives is undeniable. Many individuals still cherish items they purchased from Richards years ago, each piece carrying a unique story and memories of exceptional quality. The store boasted an impressive selection of renowned brands such as Aquascutum, Pringle, Ballantyne, Daks, Braemar, Jaegar, Dorville, and Hardy Amies, catering to customers who sought both style and longevity.
While I visited Maria, she was writing out descriptions of the Richards items featured in various newspapers between 1946 and 1950. From Golf Australia to the Sydney Morning Herald, it was obvious that Richards was a very well-known and celebrated brand. Through her work, Maria provides the curators with an invaluable resource for exploring the fashion trends and historical context of that era.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Maria for her invaluable work and look forward to uncovering more stories from our remarkable behind-the-scenes volunteers in the future.
Stay tuned as we continue to feature the remarkable individuals who make our Volunteer Program thrive!
Until then,
