Volunteer Outing to the Chau Chak Wing Museum

This week Jessie shares her thoughts on our recent field trip to the Chau Chak Wing Museum

You probably know this by now, but on the 20th of most months we go on a field trip to a different museum or gallery around Sydney. This month we went to the Chau Chak Wing Museum, which is located on the beautiful University of Sydney campus.

We first got an introduction to the museum, which to my surprise, was much bigger than I’d anticipated. Then we were introduced to Shuxia and Julian, who were the curators of the exhibition that we were there to view – Sentient Paper.

Sentient Paper celebrates paper in China as an ancient enlightening technology, an embodiment of knowledge, a vehicle for political and philosophical ideologies, as well as an expressive artistic medium.

And boy, did we see all of that in our tour. For example, these pictures that inspire us to travel, and to think about so-called Australia.

Or these very intricated pictures where public and private spaces are placed alongside each other.

The one thing we were most surprised by was probably this object, which was entirely made out of paper. Can you take a guess how many people it took to move it into this museum? (Hint: it’s more than 5!)

We also saw some familiar objects, like this one from our Powerhouse Collection.

To end our visit, we had a cup of tea/coffee at the museum cafe. It was surprisingly good, and we also had a view of the university campus below us.

Overall, it was a beautiful exhibition, with lots of food for thought. Make sure you go and visit Sentient Paper before next Sunday, the 2nd of April.
