Sounding the Collection: Family Day at Powerhouse Castle Hill

In this week’s blog post, volunteer Phoebe shares highlights from the about the Sounding the Collection Family Day at Castle Hill, where history, music, and creativity converged in harmony.

Last weekend marked a wonderful ‘Family Day’ at the Power House Museum Castle Hill, kicking off the school holidays with a blast! Families from all over gathered to explore the museum’s wonders, and what a day it was!

From the moment families stepped through the doors, they were greeted with a plethora of activities tailored especially for the children. Our dedicated volunteers were on hand throughout the main exhibition halls, ready to assist and guide visitors through a day packed with excitement and learning.

Fun Activities Galore!

Imagine the joy as children immersed themselves in a world of creativity, from designing paper dolls with paper, scissors, and glue to crafting outfits using recycled fabrics and safety pins. There were laughs, smiles, and an endless stream of fun stories shared along the way.

But the excitement didn’t stop there! Families were treated to music and entertainment as they explored the museum. They embarked on a playful sound safari led by the talented folks from Hurrah Hurrah, delving into the sensory world of Power House Castle Hill. And for those with a musical inclination, there were opportunities to sample the museum’s collection and even create music by making their very own “sound sandwiches” and creating record covers.

Volunteers Making Magic Happen!

Volunteers helped make the day a huge success. From assisting with crafting unique instruments from everyday materials to guiding visitors through the digital realm of Minecraft Music, their dedication and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. Sending a special shoutout to family day volunteers: Phoebe, Kim, Rowena, Mary, Bridget, Jasmin, Ron, and Claire.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on the excitement of Family Day, we’re already gearing up for more adventures ahead. Our ‘Sounding the Collection’ program continues to explore the sonic possibilities of select objects from the Powerhouse Collection, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience.

For those eager to join us on our next adventure, mark your calendars! The next family day is on Saturday 4 May and is focussed on Digital Technology.

Once again, a massive THANK YOU to our volunteers, visitors, and everyone who made Family Day at Power House Museum Castle Hill an unforgettable experience. Your support and enthusiasm fuel our mission to inspire curiosity and creativity in all who visit.

Until next time, keep exploring and dreaming big!
