As part of Sydney Design Week, Sites of Ritual invited audiences to explore the intersection of architecture, culture, and spiritual practice across three neighbouring community spaces in Bonnyrigg: Phap Bao Pagoda, the Vietnamese Community Cultural Centre, and GracePoint Chinese Presbyterian Church.

The day featured a rich program of talks, performances, demonstrations, and workshops led by local designers, faith leaders, artists, and performers. From Buddhist shrine design to Vietnamese folk art and Biblical Chinese opera, each space offered a unique insight into how design is deeply embedded in ritual, memory, and community life.

We were fortunate to have the support of six incredible volunteers who helped bring this event to life. Volunteers assisted with the free shuttle service from Cabramatta Station, helping visitors navigate the journey to Bibbys Place with ease. On-site, they supported wayfinding between the three venues, helped facilitate audience movement during performances, and provided hands-on support to the programing team — whether that meant welcoming guests, helping set up spaces, or assisting with lunch.

The volunteers embraced the spirit of the event, engaging warmly with the community, learning about different cultural practices, and contributing to the welcoming, respectful atmosphere across all three sites. Many shared that it was a memorable and meaningful experience, offering a rare opportunity to participate in such a rich and diverse cultural day.
A heartfelt thank you to our volunteers who assisted on the day — it was a blast having you on board, and we’re so grateful for your time and support.
